Somerset 3D secures second Euan Hankey sponsorship

For the second year running, Somerset 3D branding is being seen on national TV through the sponsorship of up-and-coming Somerset racing driver Euan Hankey.

The logo and website address of Somerset 3D – the county’s inward investment body – is being displayed on Euan’s car and clothing in the 2010 Porsche Carrera Cup GB, the pinnacle of British motor racing, which is set to be seen by 15 million people.

Euan, who was born in Somerset and lives in the county, competed in the first two races of the season at Thruxton over the Easter weekend and was declared ‘Driver of the Weekend’ after finishing runner-up and third after battling against rivals Tim Harvey and Michael Caine.

Euan says, "It was a fantastic weekend and I'm absolutely over the moon. I never thought this would happen in my first weekend in the Carrera Cup and my first races in a GT car. I wouldn't be here today without the Carrera Cup Scholarship. Porsche has given me so much support."

Racing his 911GT3 Cup car around the high-speed Hampshire track was a real challenge. "I've thoroughly enjoyed driving the car and it is seriously tough. It's very hot in there and I can't imagine what it will be like in the summer.

"The older guys are going to take some beating because I was really pushing. I got some muscle pump-up in my right arm over the last four laps and I had to change gear with my left hand, which wasn't ideal. By then I wasn't focusing on getting ahead of Tim; I was concentrating on keeping Michael behind me. So I'm planning to get a bit fitter."

Now, Euan is looking ahead to rounds three and four at Rockingham on 24 & 25 April. "Hopefully I can keep on learning and go one better in the next round," he adds.
The season consists of around 14 races, which are all televised on ITV and Somerset 3D’s logo will be seen on the roof, front and back of Euan’s Team Parker Racing car.

Somerset 3D’s head of marketing, Owen Tebbutt, says, “The sponsorship is a very cost-effective way to get the Somerset 3D brand in front of millions of our target market. More than three hundred thousand fans are expected to watch the races, a number of which take place in the South East. Five million are set to watch live TV coverage and double that number tune in to the highlights.

“We are also hoping that Euan will be able to make some personal appearances on behalf of Somerset 3D.”

Euan is completing in the Carrera Cup, part of the British Touring Car Championship programme, after winning a coveted scholarship from Porsche. Last year, he successfully competed in the Formula Renault UK Championship.

Euan’s manager and adviser, Roger Phillips, is an Somerset 3D ambassador and runs the Somerset-based Management and Motor-Sport Consultancy, Action Resources Ltd.

Euan – who spoke at the recent Somerset 3D ambassadors’ lunch – says, “I am really happy to support Somerset 3D. I hope the association will continue and I hope to get more involved. My mother runs a successful small business, so we know first-hand that Somerset is a terrific place to launch and grow your business.

“It’s no wonder that more and more companies are looking to be based here and I can really help to put Somerset on the map as a great business location.”

The British Racing Drivers' Club named Euan as a “rising star” and he is hoping to emulate Somerset’s F1 World Champion Jenson Button and become a professional racing driver.

Euan is interested in business issues and last year completed a degree in The Business of Real Estate Management.
