Quality of life here is second-to-none thanks to stunning surroundings, good schools, clean air, unbeatable produce on the doorstep, and a creative heritage that goes back centuries. Don’t just take our word for it – here’s what some of the locals have to say about why business is great in Somerset…

  • Deborah Meaden

I feel very lucky to live and work in Somerset, it’s a lovely county with so much to offer. It’s got all the benefits of being a wonderful place to live, but it also has a lot of the attributes that make it a great place to do business. It attracts a good quality of people and its transport links are excellent – I can get on the train in Taunton and be in London Paddington in an hour and 40 minutes. I’m within 10 minutes of the A303 and 20 minutes of the M4, I’m 45 minutes into Bristol airport and 30 minutes into Exeter airport. Somerset is full of thriving businesses and entrepreneurial people – this is not a rural, sleepy county!

  • Roger Saul, Kilver Court

Over 10 years ago now, Tatler magazine named Somerset the 'Cool County' and since then it has gone from strength to strength both as a destination and ‘the place to be’. Here in the heart of the English countryside you have an area of outstanding natural beauty with an abundance of cultural and visitor attractions, excellent hospitality with some of the UK's best hotels and restaurants. These are just a few of the reasons that make Somerset such a fantastic place to live and work. The excellent transport links to London, Bath, and other UK cities, as well as international connections via Bristol airport – which is just over 30 minutes away from Kilver Court – make it an ideal place to run a business. Not to forget the numerous excellent schools in the area for those with a family who are planning to relocate or move their business to Somerset.
  • AgustaWestland

Finmeccanica - AgustaWestland is a technology leader in its markets and has an unrivalled range of helicopters designed to satisfy the requirements of commercial and military customers. Next year AgustaWestland will celebrate 100 years of aircraft manufacturing at its Yeovil facility in Somerset. The Company manufactures the AW159 and AW101 military helicopters as well as the new AW189 commercial helicopter at its Yeovil facility for both UK and export customers around the world. With over 3,200 employees based in Somerset it is one of the largest employers in the county.
  • Martin Thatcher, Thatchers Cider

Somerset is an inspirational place to call home. If you are a food and drink producer, this is the place to be – alongside thriving, likeminded entrepreneurs where craft, quality and originality comes first. Businesses in other parts of the country can only aspire to the lifestyle and surroundings that Somerset offers – for us, it’s all part of being born and bred here. We wouldn’t have it any other way.
  • Michael Eavis

Somerset is a wonderful place where real people produce, perform and achieve in a way that other counties cannot compete with! Look at the evidence: industry leading companies such as AgustaWestland Helicopters, Mulberry, Clarks Shoes, Glastonbury Festival and Thatcher’s Cider; renowned sportsmen like Ian Botham and Jenson Button – not forgetting the wonderful and fertile pasture lands that produce more milk than any other county in the UK, or even the world!
  • Sassi Holford

Taunton is a great location for a business as it is big enough to have High Street chains but small enough to accommodate independents giving it its own identity as a busy country town. I personally love Vivary Park, as I pass it each morning whilst walking to work, it has a great community atmosphere and in the summer is filled with families and youngsters relaxing there. The accessibility via railway to anywhere in the country including the airlines is fantastic, instantly improving your business possibilities and uniquely has immediate access to amazing countryside with two hill ranges and coastlines all close by.
  • EDF Energy

EDF Energy is proud to be investing in Somerset. Hinkley Point C is a 10 year, £16bn project, which will provide millions of pounds of business for Somerset and the South West. It is the largest construction project in Europe, significantly bigger than London 2012, with a vast investment in skills and infrastructure to support the project providing further benefits for the local economy. Never has there been a better time for businesses to come to Somerset!
  • Simon Saunders, Ariel Motor Company

People are sometimes a bit surprised to find a company like ours in Somerset but then I point out that helicopters are made just up the road in Yeovil and there are plenty of other hi-tech businesses in Somerset too. It’s a working county, in every sense of the word, and one that simply gets on and does things. It’s also a lifestyle choice as I live as well as work in a beautiful part of England, with great communications, schools and people, so for me Somerset embodies the best of all worlds.
  • Mel Timmins, Sheppy's Cider

I’ve been living and working in Somerset for 11 years now and have been lucky enough to work with some amazing food and drink brands. As a passionate foodie myself, I think Somerset is pretty unbeatable when it comes to choice, quality, creativity and entrepreneurialism – particularly in the small business sector. Beautiful countryside, clean air, fresh home-grown ingredients and a deep-rooted heritage of producing fantastic products is what makes Somerset so special. These are exciting times and I think Somerset is leading the way in embracing growth and opportunity in our region.
  • Andy Rowswell, Gooch & Housego

People are central to our success. We are fortunate to have a skilled local workforce and the heritage of seventy years of specialist manufacturing in Ilminster gives us an advantage which cannot be overstated. Moreover it’s a beautiful part of the world and a good place to do business.
