In the midst of all the financial doom and gloom, it’s encouraging to hear that Somerset’s inward investment body, Somerset 3D, is celebrating another successful year in 2011, with prospects for the coming year looking even better.


Around 100 delegates attended the latest Hinkley Supply Chain event, entitled 'How to win business at Hinkley C’, to find out more about the opportunities to get involved in the Hinkley Point C new nuclear development through smart business development and collaboration.


South West manufacturers will continue to receive expert advice and practical, hands-on support from the same local network of manufacturing specialists but with the additional support and backing of a new nationally-operated Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS), that could help generate £1.5bn in growth


Working in conjunction with Sedgemoor District Council, BAE Systems and their consultant team are continuing to advance proposals to develop the former Royal Ordnance Factory situated at Puriton, North East of Bridgwater Town Centre.


Significant effort is being taken by the Somerset Hinkley Supply Chain Team, a joint Somerset Chamber of Commerce and EDF Energy project, to develop good intelligence of local supplier capability in order to deliver an effective supplier matching exercise for main contractors early enough in the Hinkley C new nuclear programme.

This work is allowing the joint Chamber and Somerset 3D teams to build strong relationships with the National and International Tier 1 contractors which will lead to significant investment in Somerset.


EDF Energy Chief Executive, Vincent de Rivaz attended the Nuclear Development Forum on 27 October with the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Chris Huhne MP, Energy Minister Charles Hendry MP and Mike Weightman, Chief Nuclear Inspector. This was his full statement:-

“Secretary of State, this is an important moment.”

“We have achieved a lot this year - together. As we look back on 2011 we will see it as a significant year. What we have done has been achieved collaboratively. We need to continue to work together."


Earlier this year, the Government outlined the eight locations deemed suitable for new power stations by 2025. The South West will be the only part of the country to host two new power plants – Hinkley Point and Oldbury in South Gloucestershire.

The development of these two power plants is expected to cost up to £20 billion and will provide a significant opportunity for businesses in Somerset and the South West.


The Nuclear Research Centre (NRC) is a joint venture between the University of Bristol and the University of Oxford which will create a centre of national and international importance in nuclear research.


Two of Somerset’s newest inward investors are celebrating after winning the New to Somerset Award at this year’s prestigious Somerset Business Awards.


The crème de la crème of Somerset’s business community turned out for the Somerset 3D Ambassadors’ Reception on 10th October, to celebrate the county’s vibrant food and drink sector and hear more about the work done to date by the inward investment organisation in promoting Somerset’s dynamic business culture.
