Somerset’s great transport links are a boost for Wolf Hall production team

Visitors to Somerset are often surprised at how easy it is to get here and how impressive the transport connections are, both within Somerset and reaching out to other parts of the UK. It’s one of the many reasons why Somerset is such a great place to do business. The production team for the BBC’s new flagship period drama, Wolf Hall, were no exception.

Somerset boasts all the idyllic things you’d expect, with stunning scenery, picturesque rural villages (as well as lively towns), friendly locals, and lots of wonderful places to eat and drink. Architectural heritage is a key part of the county’s landscape, with thousands of historical sites and buildings in Somerset. Several of these – including Montacute House near Yeovil and Barrington Court near Ilminster – have had a starring role in the BBC’s Wolf Hall drama series.

Producer Mark Pybus explains, “One of the great things about Somerset and filming here has been the ease of getting around and the absence of traffic, whilst there are also good rail links to all the towns that we’ve worked in. The county as a whole has great transport links, which makes the logistics of filming here so much easier.”

Somerset has a thriving creative industry and a culture rich in arts, literature, music and entertainment. National Trust properties, English Heritage sites, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and much more all add to the county’s exceptional charm and heritage – and all this only a couple of hours from London.

Pybus continues, “Somerset is a fantastic place to film in the UK. For us, there was the variety of Tudor locations which wasn’t on offer in any other part of the country, and the fact that it’s only two to two and a half hours from London is a big plus as well.”

Speaking about the location in general, he added, “As you drive from place to place, you’re going through countryside that seems second-to-none, it’s stunning. I wasn’t aware that the countryside in Somerset was as beautiful as it is so I feel that I’ve been able to see some of the best of Somerset.”
