Somerset is hosting a low carbon business conference in the early summer, to demonstrate how renewable energy companies and green businesses can thrive in the county.

‘Somerset – The Energy to Achieve’ is being held on 24th May and is focusing on the low carbon energy sector, with emphasis on low carbon energy generation. It’s aimed at businesses in Somerset and those looking to move west to the county.

The UK Budget 2011, commended by Chancellor George Osborne last week, contains good news for low carbon energy companies, small businesses and green investors.
 
Perhaps the most widely reported of all of the Chancellor’s measures announced in the Budget is the trebling of initial capitalisation in the Green Investment Bank, now set at £3bn. The GIB will begin operation as early as next year, with borrowing powers from 2015/16.

A Somerset biomass company is powering the new Olympic Sailing Village in Weymouth and has sponsored local Olympic crew contender Mary Rook.
 
Somerset renewable energy company Woodpecker Energy has installed a biomass heater at the Osprey Quay Olympic Sailing Village in Weymouth.
 
The Zero C development is built by Archeson Construction. Ecofirst had already installed one Woodpecker 150kW Thermon boiler before Christmas, with another two going in this year.

New changes to the Tier 1 immigration rules will make it easier and faster for foreign entrepreneurs and investors with large amounts of money to invest to come here, in a move aimed to give a boost to the country’s economy and encourage innovation to lift the country out of recession.

The decision over planning permission for the proposed Hinkley Point C power station should be determined by the end of 2011. In the likely event that this should be approved, this will become a major catalyst for economic development throughout the county.  With a suggested investment of £10 billion between now and 2024 it would be great news for both indigenous businesses as awell as potential inward investors to Somerset.

Somerset - The Energy to Achieve is the title of this year's business conference for Somerset to be held Tuesday May 24th at the Taunton Rugby Club. The day will focus on the low carbon energy sector with the emphasis on low carbon energy generation.

The Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has been formed under the leadership of the private sector supported by the local authorities from Devon, Plymouth, Somerset and Torbay and creates a powerful economic alliance.

With a diverse economy, our area has many strengths, including, outstanding expertise in low carbon energy generation (notably nuclear power and renewables), the defence sector, marine and maritime industries.
