A foreign investment team has been bowled over by the welcome – and investment opportunities – that Somerset provides.

Ahead of the scheduled formal business meeting, inward investment body Somerset 3D invited the South West Regional Development Agency’s (SWRDA) officials from China, Japan and the United States to a low-key bowling evening.

The new green investment bank initiative announced in the Budget is a great opportunity to boost the renewable energy sector, according to inward investment body Somerset 3D.

The £2billion green investment bank is being set up to help provide equity for renewable energy and transport projects. It will be financed by private investment and the sale of UK assets.

Top-choice secondary school for 91.5% of Somerset parents

For the second year running, more than nine out of 10 parents in Somerset have been allocated their first-choice secondary school.

In Somerset, 91.5% of parents have secured a place for their children at their most-preferred school in September, says Somerset County Council. Nationally, it is believed around 90,000 parents – one in six applicants – have failed to secure their favoured option, according to a Guardian survey.

Somerset 3D welcomes 50 IBM servicing centre jobs

Inward investment body Somerset 3D has welcomed the creation of up to 50 new jobs in the county by IT giant IBM.

IBM’s new, state-of-the-art servicing centre at Highbridge, which is due to open within the next few months, will provide a range of light engineering jobs, management positions and other roles.

Award-winning businessman and successful business advisor Gerard Tucker has been appointed as Somerset 3D’s Inward Investment Manager and will handle the increasing enquiries from businesses wishing to relocate to Somerset.

A recent outdoor advertising campaign promoting Somerset to London businesses has seen visitors to the somerset3d.co.uk website soar, with an increase of 98% in website traffic from London during the campaign.

The innovative poster campaign encouraged stressed commuters to escape the rat race by moving to Somerset ‘where life is better by a country mile’.

The campaign ran for two weeks or more from 20 September at a number of key commuter stations in and around the capital, including London Waterloo, London Victoria, Clapham Junction, Guildford and Reading.
