Ambitious London firms ‘should look to Somerset’

Ambitious London businesses committed to expansion should consider moving to Somerset, says a top inward investment agency.

Somerset offers business growth opportunities as well as lifestyle benefits for city entrepreneurs fed up with long commuting and stressful lives, says business relocation body Somerset 3D.

Around 60% of small and medium-sized London business are aiming to expand during the recession, says a recent poll by Business Link in London.

Somerset 3D’s interim CEO, Rupert Cox, says, “Somerset has the highest business start-up rates of any county and around half of those who relocate come from London and the Home Counties.

“Somerset is the place where your business can grow and you can enjoy our countryside, coast and clean air.”

Dragons’ Den business guru Deborah Meaden, who was born and lives in Somerset, says it offers a host of business advantages, including excellent transportation links, communications, a skilled workforce, entrepreneurial spirit – and a wonderful lifestyle.

“I can get on the train in Taunton and I am in Paddington in under an hour and forty minutes. If I lived on the outskirts of London, I would not be able to get in that quickly.

Within ten minutes I am on the A303. In twenty minutes I am on the M4. I am forty-five minutes from Bristol Airport and thirty minutes from Exeter Airport.”

“Somerset has just about everything. I could choose to live and work anywhere, but I have chosen Somerset because it gives me the kind of rural life that I want, but with direct and easy access to London and overseas.”

The survey of more than 3,000 London businesses found 42% of small companies are looking to exploit new business opportunities and 17% are developing new products and services to boost market share, despite three-quarters being affected by the downturn.

Somerset 3D is funded by the local authorities and chaired by Honor Chapman CBE, the first CEO of Think London, the Capital’s official foreign direct investment agency. Honor lives and farms in Somerset.

She says, “Somerset 3D is an innovative project encouraging inward investment and promoting indigenous business growth with the message that Somerset offers a wonderful lifestyle and opportunities for business development.”
