Tell me about your background, where you are from, your early influences etc.

My name is Frank Matthys and I live in Knokke, a Belgian bathing resort on the coast, close to the Netherlands.
When I was about seven years old my father had a big encyclopedia of 24 books. In one of these books I saw an anaglyph of ribs. I was so amazed by that ‘magic picture’ that, one day, I wanted to know how ‘they’ make such things. Becoming a printer and photographer, that picture is/was always in my mind, so making and printing 3D-pictures looks ‘normal’ for me.

Mijn naam is Frank Matthys en woon te Knokke, een Belgische badplaats aan de Belgische kust, dicht bij de Nederlandse grens.
Toen ik ongeveer zeven jaar was had mijn vader een meterlange encyclopedie van 24 delen. In één van die boekdelen stond een anaglief van een ribbenkas. Ik probeerde dan, tevergeefs, mijn vinger tussen die ribben te steken. Ik was daar zo door gefascineerd dat ik ooit wilde zou weten hoe men zulke foto’s maakt. Door later drukker en fotograaf te worden, en met die foto altijd in mijn gedachten, kon ik die twee technologiën gebruiken om 3D-foto’s te maken en te drukken.

Je m’appel Frank Mathys et j’habite Knokke, une station balnéaire sur la côte Belge. Près de la frontière Néerlandaise. Lorsque j’avais 7 ans mon pères avait une grande encyclopédie de 24 livres. Dans un de ces livres j ‘ai vu une anaglyphe d’une cage thoracique. J’étais si étonné par cette image magique que par la suite je voulais savoir comment un tel effet pouvait être produit. En devenant imprimeur et photographe, j’ai/j’avais toujours cette image en tête, alors la création et l’impression d’images 3d a ‘l’air normale’.

In 2005 we wanted to make something prestigious. We already knew that 3D-photography is a brilliant technique to reproduce art patrimony. And because the old city of Bruges is only 16 km from Knokke, we dared to think to make a book of Bruges with only 3D-pictures. So we worked 2 years on the concept. It should be correct in a photographic and typographical way.

In 2005 wilden wij iets prestigieus maken. We wisten reeds dat 3D-photografie een uitstekende techniek is om kunstpatrimonium weer te geven. En omdat de oude stad Brugge bijna 16 km gelegen is van Knokke durfden wij denken om een boek te maken van Brugge met uitsluitend 3D-foto’s. In totaal hebben wij 2 jaar gewerkt aan dit concept. Het moest correct zijn op fotografisch als typografisch vlak.

En 2005 nous avons voulu créer quelque chose de prestigieux. Nous savions déjà que la photographie 3d était une technique merveilleuse pour reproduire l’art patrimoniale. Et parce que l’ancienne cite de Bruges n’est qu'a 16 km de Knokke nous avons osé de développer l’idée de créer un livre sur Bruges uniquement avec des images 3d.
Alors nous avons travaillés sur le concept pendant deux ans pour atteindre une exactitude photographique et typographique.

Half the total of the pictures are taken with one camera, the other half with 2 cameras. It depends on what you have to photograph.
The software that I use comes from Switzerland. Unfortunately the programmer died in July 2007. The software has no special name because he just made it for me, and I don’t have the source code …

De helft van de foto’s zijn gefotografeerd met één camera, de andere helft met twee camera’s. Het hangt ervan af wat en hoe je je onderwerp wenst te fotograferen.
De software dat ik gebruik komt uit Zwitserland. Triest dat de programmeur in juli 2007 is gestorven. The software heeft geen naam omdat hij het enkel voor mij heeft gemaakt, en ik heb geen source-code …

La moitié des photos ont étés prises avec un appareil photo, l’autre moitié avec deux. Cela dépend du sujet à photographier. Le logiciel que j’ai utilisé vient de Suisse. Malheureusement le programmeur est décédé en 2007.
Le logiciel ne porte pas de nom spécifique car il l’a écrit pour moi et je ne possède pas la référence du code de base.

Were you given access to places normally not open to tourists ?

Because I had the full support of the city-hall and the museums of the city of Bruges, I could take pictures where I want. For some pictures they asked everybody to leave the building, so I could shoot relaxed because they also turned off the security-system around the art-pieces. Then I could get closer to the objects.

Daar ik ‘carte-blanche’ had gekregen van het stadsbestuur en de musea van Brugge kon ik dus vrij fotograferen. Voor enkele foto’s werd aan de bezoekers gevraagd het gebouw te ontruimen om het beveiligingssysteem heel tijdelijk af te zetten zodat ik dichter bij het object kon fotograferen.

Parce que j’ai bénéficié d’une totale collaboration de la par de l’hôtel de ville et du musée de la cite de Bruges j’avais la possibilité de faire des photos la où je voulais. Pour certaines photos ils on demandés à ce que les lieux soient complètement vides afin que je puisse photographier à mon aise, car cela leur permettait de couper le système de sécurité autour des objets d’art. Ainsi, je pouvais les approcher de près.

Tell me more on how the aerial shots were acheived.

Using aerial three-dimensional photography is the only way to show how big and beautiful buildings and places are. I had to invent a way to shoot these in 3D. So we did a few test flights with an airplane and finally I photographed from a helicopter.

Driedimensionale luchtfotografie is de ultieme manier om grote gebouwen en pleinen weer te geven. Ik moest dus een manier van fotograferen bedenken om deze objecten weer te geven in 3D. Daarvoor deden we enkele testvluchten met een vliegtuig om uiteindelijk de finale shoot te doen vanuit een helicopter.

L’utilisation de photos 3d est le seul moyen de montrer la grandeur et la beauté des bâtiments et des endroits. J’ai dû inventer le moyen de l’accomplir et pour ce faire, nous avons effectués quelques vols d’essais en avion. Finalement, j’ai pris les clichés d’un hélicoptère.

All the pictures are in black & white, was this your choice as a photographer or more to do with the printing side of things ?

The big disadvantage of colour-anaglyphs is that you can’t see real colours through red/cyan glasses. Red/green anaglyphs give the most contrast and the best 3D-effect.

Het grote nadeel van kleur-anagliefen is dat je geen reëele kleuren kan waarnemen. Rood/groen anagliefen hebben het grootste contrast en het beste 3D-effect.

You have my dream job as a photographer with his own printing company, which came first ?

We have a printing company as a family business. My father started it 54 years ago, and I also became a printer. That 'magic picture' and photography came later. So if you combine all these techniques then ‘the sky is the limit’ !

Thuis hebben we een drukkerij als familiebedrijf. Mijn vader startte zowat 54 jaar geleden en ik heb de zaak overgenomen. Die fameuze foto en fotografie kwamen later. En als je al deze technieken combineert dan kan je mooie dingen maken.

What plans do you have for future projects ?

In Belgium I have plans the make 3D-books of the cities Gent and Brussels.

People from Mexico invited me to make a series of 3D-books of old colonial cities of Mexico. And we are busy to get the photography-license to make the 3D-book of the Taj Mahal in India.

In België hoop ik nog 3D-boeken te maken van de steden Gent en Brussel.

Vanuit Mexico heb ik een aanbod gekregen om een reeks 3D-boeken te maken over oud-koloniale steden in Mexico. En we zijn bezig om de fotografie-vergunning te krijgen om het 3D-boek te maken van de Taj Mahal in Indië.

J'ai prévus de faire des livres 3d sur les cités de Gent et Bruxelles en Belgique.

Les gens du Mexique m'ont invité à faire une série de livres 3d de vieilles villes coloniales de Mexique. Et nous essayons d’obtenir une licence de photographie pour faire un livre en 3d du Taj Mahal en Inde.
